The Topeka Mural Project

2023 PROJECT UPDATE:
WE ARE THE KEEPERS MURAL PROJECT

ArtsConnect in partnership with the Tonantzin Society and under the artistic leadership of Kansas Mural Roster artist, Mona Cliff (Aaniiih/Nakota), will paint several murals along the banks of the Shunganunga Creek in Topeka, Kansas. These murals will be painted on retaining walls that run alongside the Shunga Trail and will focus on themes of environmental justice and waterway protection.

WHAT IS THE TOPEKA MURAL PROJECT?

Since 2013, the Topeka Mural Project has been focused mainly on the installation of significant works of public art in areas of the city that have been struggling with property crime and vandalism. These projects not only accomplish goals related to community pride and safety but also seek to develop and mentor artists who have the skills to create more works of art in our community. The murals provide a unique opportunity to discuss the critical importance of public art in developing community pride and health.
